About Me :-)

Welcome and thank you for visiting my blog! I am a 45 year old woman, mom to two active pre-teen/teen boys and wife to one "skinny" husband ;-). I am blogging my progress on Jorge Cruise's Belly Fat Cure. I began on August 17th, 2010. To date, I've lost almost 35 pounds and 5 inches on my waist. The Belly Fat Cure has changed my life and I wanted to share my story with everyone. I am a "former" soda/sugar addict; and Jorge has changed the way I view sugar and food, FOREVER!! My whole family has started eating healthier and even the kids like all the new veggies we now try at dinner. This has changed my life and I hope it will change yours as well :-)

Week Fourteen Summary/Weight Loss = 0.6

Well, last Tuesday was my weigh-in, but with the holidays I am just now getting a chance to post. I've been eating the Belly Fat Cure way for 14 weeks now and have officially lost exactly 30 pounds!!!!  My weight is down .6 pounds from the week before, I am now down to 208.4.

I don't know why it's creeping off so slowly......I haven't been cheating. The only thing I can think of is that I am not eating enough food. I haven't been having my usual string cheese and almond snacks in the morning and afternoon. Some days I've only been eating two meals, I just haven't been hungry. I am also staying within my counts at dinner, but haven't been having as many salads. I've also been bad about tracking my fiber. I need to get back into the habit of tracking that again when I track my sugar and carbs.  I've also probably gotten as far as I can without amping up the exercise!

Even though the scales are moving slowly, my clothes are a different story!  Everything is much, much looser. I am going to have to go back again and get rid of some more things.  My jeans are so baggy, that when I am around the house, I've taken to rolling up the waistband to help them stay up. Otherwise, they are falling down my hips. I know it's a good problem to have, but definitely annoying when I am trying to get something done and have to hoist my pants up every two minutes. I am hoping to hold off until after the holidays are over before buying new jeans.

Tomorrow will be the week 15 weigh in, so I hope to have that post up in a more timely manner! I'll also talk about Thanksgiving.

I hope everyone is doing well! NAMASTE :-)

Week Thirteen Summary/Weight Loss = 0.8

Hello everyone - Sorry for the lateness of my weekly Tuesday weigh-in post.....my weight loss was .8 pounds.....not as good as I expected, but I am now down to 209.4 a total weight loss of a full 29 pounds!!!  I was hoping to be able to say "I've lost 30 pounds"......hopefully next week!

I am having so much fun trying out new vegetables that I've not eaten very much before. First, it was the Brussels sprouts. I made the delicious salad, then a couple of nights later I sauteed them in some olive oil and other seasonings.......ohmygoodness!!! We'll be having Brussels sprouts at least once a week now.

Another thing I tried this week was to work in avocado in as much as possible. It's actually a fruit, and it's very high in fiber. I ate it three ways this week. First, I cut some up and put it in my scrambled eggs with some goat cheese....holy cow, it was scrumptious. I also mashed some up and spread it in a tortilla. I also added a little bean dip, cheese, and some greens. Very, very, very good!  I also sliced up some avocado and put it in salads that I ate.

Next week's vegetable will be butternut squash! Let me know how you cook it!!!  I'd also like to hear how everyone else eats their avocados and Brussels sprouts.

Thanksgiving is come up next week, but I'm not too worried. I love how breaking my sugar addiction has also given me back my will-power and self-control. I plan on loading up on turkey and veggies. If I feel the need to eat any potatoes or pumpkin pie, I know I will be satisfied with just one bite.

Have a great weekend everyone! Constant Vigilance!!

I will fear the Brussels sprouts no more!!!

I ate Brussels sprouts yesterday.

For the first time in over 35 years.

And I lived to tell the tale here ;-)

I came by my fear of Brussels sprouts honestly. The sprouts of my youth were small, smelly, disgusting little balls of.....of...of...........really gross vegetables. You know the kind...you have to rub your leg while you are chewing and swallowing, as if that really helps that nasty piece of food in your mouth to go down??!!!

After receiving a few signs that I just couldn't ignore anymore I decided that the time had come to finally put on my big girl panties and face my fear of this dreaded sprout........once and for all. First, my friend Julie had told me last weekend how she seasons and sautes her Brussels sprouts, how yummy they are and even her kids eat them!  huh?? her kids eat them??!!  Then, while perusing Jessica's Seinfeld's website I ran across run of her previous blogs about Autumn vegetables. She actually wrote "Don't fear the Brussels sprouts". She might as well just have said "SUSAN, don't fear the Brussels sprouts". Finally, yesterday's blog on the Gluten-free Girl blog was......you guessed it.....a recipe for Brussels Sprouts Salad!!!

I went out, then and there to make my very first purchase of Brussels sprouts. I had no idea where I was going to look in the store......fresh, frozen or canned, but I had my suspicions that the nasty, smelly things that tortured me as a child were from a can. So, I headed to the produce aisle and this is what I found!

It was a little disconcerting to see that huge stalk of sprouts, like some weird alien growth, but I decided to buy the stalk after seeing the sprouts that were offered in a container. These just looked fresher, crisper and greener.  When I got the stalk home, my youngest (as boys will do) immediately wielded it as a weapon and/or piece of sporting equipment ;-)
I followed the recipe on the Gluten Free Girl blog. It was fast and easy. Find it here:
http://glutenfreegirl.blogspot.com/2010/11/brussels-sprouts-salad.html
This is the result!

A quick, delicious side dish.....kind of a cross between cole slaw and broccoli salad, but with no sugar in the recipe. I think I will make some for Thanksgiving and throw in some dried cranberries for color. I even had enough sprouts left that I can try them seasoned and sauteed like my friend Julie recommended :-)

Have a great weekend everyone! CONSTANT VIGILANCE!

a little star struck......

Good afternoon everyone! It is a gorgeous Thursday here in south central Illinois.....mid-70's!  I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful day.

Today, my thoughts are specifically with all those brave and courageous Americans who have ever served our country to protect our safety and freedom. Those especially close to my heart are my father and father-in-law, and  my high school friends Keith and Bill. Also, my other friends, Sherri, Chuck, Terri whose children are currently serving as well as my cousin Amy, her husband is active military. Thank you so much for all the sacrifices your family is making for our country.

I've been adding my favorite blogs as I find them on the right side of my own blog. I also wanted to share two websites that I've recently discovered that focus on healthy eating and living.  The first is called "do it Delicious".  It can be found here: http://doitdelicious.com/ This is Jessica Seinfeld's website. Jessica is the absolutely adorable and charming wife of Jerry Seinfeld. She just released her second cookbook, Double Delicious! Her website is alot of fun and also includes homemade videos that Jessica made to teach her friend, Ally how to cook. She is in the process of making other demo videos and I can't wait for them to be posted. They are fun to watch and Jessica makes cooking healthy look effortless. Seriously, she needs her own show!!!! I am also a tad jealous of her gourmet kitchen....check out all the features when watching her videos :-) and keep your eyes open for my favorite comedian!

The second website is called GOOP. It is Gwyneth Paltrow's "blog". She does her blog in a email newsletter style, but you can go back and read previous newsletters here http://goop.com/.  She blogs about healthy eating and good living in general. Oh my goodness, who doesn't love GP???!!! Men love her, women want to be her ;-)  She is sooooo incredibly talented.  I didn't see her perform on the CMA awards last night, but watched the video on youtube today. Check it out if you have a chance.

Thanks to my BFC friend, Amber who shared the GOOP blog about sugar addiction recently on her own blog. I immediately signed up to receive GOOP and that is how I discovered Jessica's website. What in the world did we do before the internet?????!!!!!!

Week Twelve Summary/Weight Loss = 1.0

Good morning everyone!  It's been a full 12 weeks, 3 months on the BFC. I don't even like to say "been on" since it has truly become a lifestyle for me. I am down another 1 pound from last week!!  My current weight is now 210.2, a total weight loss in 12 weeks of 28.2. I was hoping for a full 30 pound weight loss for 3 months - but I'll take "almost 30"!!

I was in St. Louis this weekend with a friend and I got to shop at Whole Foods for the first time. I was so excited to go, but then was overwhelmed when I walked in the door. I wish I could have had the whole day to really explore in there, it was also very crowded. I didn't really make any great finds, but I did pick up some organic versions of regular items my family eats.

We ate at P.F. Chang's......first time for me!!!  It was delicious. I feel I made healthier choices than I would have in the past, but I am sure there was hidden sugars in the food I was eating. I ordered Moo Goo Gai Pan, to avoid eating anything breaded and fried. We also ordered sides of spicy green beans, sauteed spinach, Shang-hai cucumbers!  All very yummy!!!!!

Also visited Barnes and Noble. I wanted to peruse the cookbooks, etc. I thought I might pick up a diabetic cookbook, but there were so many to choose from and the few that I glanced, many recipes called for the use of Splenda, etc.  Instead......I did pick up a copy of Sugar Busters! Quick and Easy Cookbook, I can't wait to dive into. I also picked up a copy of The Eat-Clean Diet Recharged and The Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook by Tosca Reno to educate myself on eating clean.

I also picked up a copy of The Fiber 35 Diet by Brenda Watson. I am sticking with the BFC, but picked up a copy of this book to help me incorporate more fiber in my diet. I started reading this book last night and it's full of great information. She recommends a MINIMUM of 35 grams of fiber daily, with 40-50 grams being even better. I am curious to see how her menu plans add up on sugar/carb values.  I'll blog on the information from this book later this week.

Last week, Jessica Seinfeld was on Oprah so I also picked up a copy of her new cookbook, Double Delicious. It looks like great, healthy recipes, especially for the family. I only wish that sugar content was listed for the recipes.....I will have to figure them on my own.

So, I'll keep plugging away........it will be interesting to see my results next week with the added fiber. I've been getting 30 grams per day, so this week I will aim for 35 grams per day and work my way up each week. The Fiber35 Diet did suggest increasing fiber gradually to avoid gas and bloating.  I am hoping I can get back to a 2-2 1/2 pound weekly weight loss.

CONSTANT VIGILANCE!!!!

Week Eleven Summary/Weight Loss = 1.4

Greetings everyone, I was pleased to see a 1.4 weight loss on the scale this week to bring my total weight loss to 27.2 pounds!  Woohoo! I've started saying I've lost "almost 30 pounds" and I can't wait to make that number official!!  I made it through Halloween without any treats......I bought all the candy that I don't like, Skittles, Starbust, gummy "body parts", etc. Also, my kids are too old to trick or treat, so I wasn't tempted by them bringing anything home!

I did give up the nightly red wine.....I just find it too difficult to drink only one glass :-p.  I've also gone back to weighing myself everyday. I had stopped daily weigh-ins, but I found I tended to flounder a bit more when I didn't know what my daily weight was. I haven't been cheating or over-eating, but without the morning weigh-in, I tended to feel lost and not motivated to be active.  I would love to see my weight drop under 210 pounds next week!!

I am watching Dr Oz right now and it's a great episode about secrets the food industry doesn't want you to know......mainly the amount of HIDDEN SUGAR in our foods, especially the foods that claim to be "healthy" for us. Don't let "heart healthy" labels, or vitamin enhanced products, etc trick you into thinking it's okay for you. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS check your food label for sugar content.  Very interesting information......but I sure could have lived without knowing how much insects, maggots, and rodent hair and feces are allowable by FDA standards! LOL!

I voted, then went to give blood. The nurse laughed when I was able to tell her EXACTLY what my weight was. But, then I told her how much weight I've lost in the past couple of months.....needless to say, she wrote down the title of the book and is going to look for it today!

Another friend of mine started the BFC last week. I got a message from her this morning.....she lost 6 pounds!!!!  And she said it was fairly easy...no sugar withdrawal symptoms! Weigh to go, Shelly!

I'm headed to St Louis this weekend to see John Mellencamp with a friend and plan on doing some shopping. I do want to hit a Barnes and Noble. I would like to pick up a copy of "The F Factor Diet". A fellow BFC'er recommended this book as a resource in getting more fiber in your diet. I am also going to look for a cookbook that has some low-sugar recipes, or at least a cookbook that lists nutritional information for each recipe.

Have a great week everyone, CONSTANT VIGILANCE!
